One of the books we got for Anya to help her understand my pregnancy, having a new baby in the house and becoming a big sister is Dr. Sears’ What Baby Needs, an excellent AP-friendly children’s book for what to expect once the baby arrives (Baby On the Way is great for the pregnancy part) . One of the pages talks about nursing the baby and shows the mom with the newborn in one arm and big sister in her other. The big sister in the illustration is lying, snuggled in mom’s arm, with her doll next to her. I made a big deal of how that’s what we can do too, talking about how when I nurse the new baby, that she can come keep us company and maybe even nurse her baby dolls (which she does sometimes). For some reason, Anya picked up on the big sister’s eyes being closed and made a special point of telling me that she would keep us company but “I’m not going to take a nap, okay?”
Did you involve the elder siblings when nursing your new baby?
